Manchester to Middlesboro

64 miles. The kindness continues.

As my last night in Kentucky, it's safe to say that it's is my second favorite state on the TransAm, next to Oregon. The friendly honks, waves, and thumbs up continued all day. What's up, Kentucky!

We had a break from busy roads for 30 miles along 66. It was a very quiet country road with some rolling hills, a few doggie chases and pretty views. Everyone warned us about eastern Kentucky (dogs and red necks), but it has not been a problem at all. The Kentucky folks have been nothing more than friendly and welcoming, so I'm not sure what all of the hype has been about. And most dogs that give chase are only after just that, they are not vicious. There was one pup today that let me see allllll of his teeth, but somehow I managed to get rid of him fast. And a few baby-killer puppies in training snoozed in the road.

We had a strange interaction with a local. He came up to us at a convenience store, introduced himself as Bill and shook my hand, then proceeded to tell us that he's going to rehab tonight. He also warned us about all of the Oxycontin in South East Kentucky, and to get the hell out of there asap. Don't worry, Bill, I have no interest in taking up a drug habit, but thanks for the heads up. And good luck getting sober.

Photos: beautiful Kentucky morning, and curves along 66.
